Event Review: Bassnectar’s 360 NYE Celebration in Greensboro, NC (TRACKLIST)

Raunchy rainbows, furry festival friends, and glitter gangs flooded the streets of Greensboro, North Carolina for the return of Bassnectar’s 360 NYE celebration. A record-breaking 22,300 Bassheads brought a wave of wubba lubba dub dub to the Greensboro Coliseum; the third highest attendance the Coliseum has ever seen!

The Coliseum wasn’t only home to Bassnectar for NYE, but also to Anna Morgan, Manic Focus, and G Jones back to back Eprom. All of the openers threw down, setting the rotating stage perfectly for Nectar to ring in the new year.

The message here is simple: music is the drug. All you need to have a good time is to show up. We’re all putting ice packs on our necks the next day. Nectar blessed us with that “Infinite” opener we’ve all wanted so bad, “TKO“, “Flashback“, “The Mystery Spot“, “Wildstyle Method“, and even “Timestretch“! The first song of 2019 was “Chasing Heaven” and Lo closed out his epic two-hour-long set with “Churn of the Century“.

What separates Nectar events from the rest of the festival industry is the generous and loving atmosphere. Lorin Ashton has created a team of Ambassadors who “break down barriers between strangers, encourage community interaction, and inspire those around them to look out for one another – at shows/festivals, in everyday life, and in the digital world.” Ambassadors can be found passing out water bottles, bracelets, high fives, collecting cans for the Food Drive, collecting coats to donate, leading stretches in the Haven or headbanging their hearts out.

Did you catch the part about FREE WATER? I’ll say it again, FREE water bottles were given out to prevent dehydration. This is unheard of at events. Venues typically charge four installments of $4.99 plus tax per bottle.

This year boasted the largest “Haven” yet, a chill space you can wander if feeling overwhelmed or in search of connection. Here you will find yoga mats, a gift alter, live painting artists, flow toy performing artists, free earplugs, etc. It is a space that encourages creativity and connectivity with your fellow concert goer, and more importantly, yourself.

music is the drug

After the show, what is it you tell your friends about? The music, light show, lasers, or the drugs you took? If you are here to get figgity fucked up only, you may be missing something.  Lorin started his set by asking: “Everyone please take a deep breath, you don’t have to, but I’d love you to.” (A man who understands consent! Yay Lo!) “Take another deep breath,” he said. “And when you exhale say ahhhhhhh.” Mindfulness matters here. Nectar encourages us to think for ourselves and STEP INTO YOUR MIND NOW. Not out of it! Not here to forget, but to feel. Feel the bass vibrate in our chest or shoot up our leg hairs. Immerse ourselves completely into the collective.

This kind of experience unites our flailing, rolling, grinding and dropping it low bodies into a sea of humans. We are part of a whole, part of today’s history, and part of each other. Here we see that we can be anything, cause there’s nothing in life that I can’t achieve. Bassnectar curated events foster a family environment, designed to look after your fellow basshead.

The power of his influence is not lost on Lorin, he used this new year’s platform to spread the word: CARE FOR OUR FUCKING PLANET! The wise words of Carl Sagan flashed before us mere minutes before midnight, paired with images of war, violence, and oppression.

“The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.”   –Carl Sagan

Thank you Planet Earth for hosting us. Thank you to the Bassheads who create this thriving community of artistic talent and love. Thank you to the Bassnectar team for creating a neck thrashing and mind-scrambling night to end the year 2018.
