It feels like just yesterday since BLAAP emerged on the electronic scene. Fast forward to last week when the newly formed duo, comprised of Of The Trees and Freddy Todd, unleashed BLAAP’s debut album, Volcanology, on Of The Trees’ record label, Memory Palace. The album is revered for its Promethean approach, blending deep, textured beats with high-energy bass drops and enigmatic sound design, showcasing their ability to intertwine cinematic ambiance with the raw passion of experimental bass music.

On my recent trip to Denver, CO, I was fortunate to catch my first BLAAP show, where the duo crafted an unforgettable evening alongside BACKWHEN, Soukii, and Halogenix. After the openers warmed up the crowd, BLAAP took the stage and unleashed mayhem on the sold-out Ogden Theater. The duo cordially dressed in matching overalls, delivering a massive performance for their album release party.

Volcanology is a sonic exploration through the cosmic depths of bass music. Seamlessly transitioning through a variety of styles, Volcanology incorporates elements of dubstep, hip-hop, house, and experimental bass music.

“LIFE CONTROL” and “BLAOWP” deliver heavy-hitting basslines that are certain to scramble the mind before the hypnotic hip-hop powerhouse track “HERE I IS” featuring MotorKam switches things up.

Don’t let the comical name of the following song fool you, “Fancy Shampoo” is all gas no brakes. It rides the rails of multiple styles with deep intricate basses that Of The Trees is known for followed by an upbeat bass house tempo that feels familiar to recent Freddy Todd performances.

“GLADIUS” exhibits BLAAP’s wide range as they bring out a kingpin in NOLA’s hip-hop community, Curren$y, as well as Boston’s Cousin Stizz. The pair take the lead with exemplary flows as Of The Trees and Freddy Todd drive the track home.

The closing track, “MUSHROOMS,” might sound familiar to you. This refashioned track takes on a new life with the help of a fan-favorite, Wreckno. Wreckno’s immaculate flow perfectly matches the vibe and drives the album home in this much-anticipated collab.

It seems like BLAAP is just getting started and fans should prepare themselves for what is sure to be a groundbreaking next step into both Of The Trees’ and Freddy Todd’s already distinguished careers.
