Globally renowned producer/instrumentalist Dabin has been on the scene for years now with too many accolades to list: his solo discography is certainly impressive, and that goes without mentioning his collaborative project with electronic heavyweight Said the Sky or his live contributions alongside BTSM and Illenium.
While his latest track “Holding On” – a banger of an anthem backed by a tonally-diverse but powerful vocal performance from Lowell – is true to the talented form of Dabin’s past releases, it is perhaps lost in the whirlwind of Wednesday’s announcement of the artist’s first-ever headlining tour. Dabin himself nearly forgot about the release, per his personal twitter!
Known for his live versatility borrowing heavily from his instrumental prowess, the compositional competence of Dabin is on full display in “Holding On.” The track begins deceptively low-key with distorted and reverb-laded vocals blended into the bulging synths simmering beneath Lowell’s opening verse.
As the track builds towards its more characteristic upbeat sound, the impact of the bouncing guitar riff permeating through the synthesized soundscape is undeniable. The layering of instrumentals throughout mimics a sort of modern pop sound that is swirled into a massive drop that weaponizes the track’s jovial bass tones and euphoric sound into a song that demands Top 40 attention.
