Canadian electronic artist Defunk has been grinding his genre-bending craft for years now. Nearing a decade in the scene, Defunk has evolved with the changing pace of bass music by constantly weaving in soul, funk, and blues sounds to the electronic genre.

His eclectic influences have drawn him praise from noteworthy artists such as Pretty Lights, GRiZ, and Gramatik. As his platform continues to expand with his palette, he has secured a supporting spot for a number of shows on an upcoming tour with The Floozies, whenever they are able to hit the road.

Given his diverse inspirational background, it was a no brainer pairing for his latest bootleg: a remix of BOOGIE T.RIO‘s recent, low-tempo reggae dub track “Dear Weed Man.” And while the bootleg compromises the original track’s fitting 4:20 run time, the Defunk rendition was aptly released April 20th to honor the holiday.

As the remix departs from its identical intro, the synthetic claps and percussion establish a tone disparate from the traditional reggae influences employed by the trio. Jumping off from the differentiating foundation, the song drops into a deep, industrial bass groove with massive percussion permeating the entire rendition.

Noticeably absent from Defunk’s bootleg is the iconic trumpet fanfare flowing throughout the original. It crops up after the first hook as a return to the bouncing dub vibes of the original; masked by a telephonic filter, the trumpet serves as more of an enchanting solo part than a centerpiece of the track.
