HIHF: What was your introduction to electronic music?

My introduction to electronic music was when I first discovered Skrillex through his ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ EP back in 2010 and thought to myself “What in the world is this sound?” Turns out the answer was Dubstep haha. Then I’d go on for hours on the UKF channel, listening to Flux Pavilion and all those artists that were carrying the scene back then, making Dubstep the genre that made me discover EDM.

HIHF: How did growing up overseas in Cyprus impact your musical journey?

International DJs would play shows in Cyprus all the time and it was through those events that I ended up discovering my passion for a career as a producer and DJ. If it hadn’t been for those shows, I’d probably still be a classical pianist. Or a composer for film? We’ll never know!

I also feel that being exposed to the EDM scene in both Europe and the U.S has really opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that an electronic artist can achieve with their sound and vision. It’s probably one of the main reasons I naturally tend to merge different genres together.

HIHF: Your music draws the line between trap and bass music, often stylized as ‘hybrid trap.’ In 2023, how do you think the worlds of dubstep and trap are colliding?

Definitely, I mean the world of dubstep and trap has been colliding for years now. I just think that we now see artists blend the two styles more than ever as trap has gotten a lot more high energy in the last couple of years. Its sound design often borrows elements from dubstep too, so there’s no doubt artists love to switch up between the two. We are also seeing lots of trap artists on dubstep lineups and vice versa, because they are built so fundamentally similar. I think it has to do with the tempo and overall energy that feels familiar enough for the audience to be able to enjoy both.

HIHF: Who are your musical influences? Both inside and outside the electronic realm.

RL Grime and Alison Wonderland have been my biggest musical influences for years now as they are the artists that got me into the trap side of EDM. Even after I knew I wanted to pursue a career as an electronic artist, I wasn’t sure what kind of sub-genre I was going for until I listened to their music for the first time. And to this day, they are still among my favorite trap artists out there. Some other ones are Heimanu, Juelz and MEMBA.

My musical influences outside of the dance music realm are M83, 6lack, The Weeknd, Bon Iver, and brakence amongst so many others.

HIHF: Speaking of your influences, what would a dream collaboration look like for you?

Collaborating with any artist that has influenced my sound or that has had some sort of emotional impact on me would be my definition of a dream collaboration. As you shift from being a music listener to being a music creator, you never think that working with the people that inspired you to do so is even a possibility, so getting to do that would be such a fulfilling moment. Also, any producer or vocalist whose music I love, listen to or play live right now is under that category as well – lots of which are already in the works!

HIHF: What’s a dream venue or festival to play?

There are honestly so many I could say, but Electric Forest and EDC have been dream festivals of mine ever since I got into electronic music. In terms of venues, Red Rocks is definitely on top of the list for me. There are certain performances from those places that have had a huge impact on the direction that my music has taken, so it would definitely feel like a full-circle moment to get to play there.

HIHF: Who are some rising star trap artists our readers should have on their radar?

Some incredible ones that are also some of my favorites right now are W IN K, Capshun, GRAIL, Xerxes, Pauline Herr and So Sus.

HIHF: What’s one fun fact about you or a hobby that is non-music related and most of your fans don’t know?

If you hang out with me long enough you’ll realize, I can (and probably will) sleep anywhere…
It doesn’t matter if it’s a loud bar or a big social gathering, if my body starts to shut down, who am I to stop it?

HIHF: What’s next for the St. Mary project?

I will be traveling to Europe all of August to play some festivals and shows back home and in terms of releases, my debut EP ‘AMEN’ is coming up, which I am very stoked about along with some of my favorite collaborations with other producers in the trap and bass scene.

Huge shoutout to St. Mary for taking the time to chat with us and be sure to show her love on social media!
