Ever since bursting onto the electronic scene with his Spitfire EP, Porter Robinson has always been assumed to be a future king of the genre. Porter has always brought an eclectic element of musicianship to his work that’s set him apart from so many of his industry competitors.
His debut album, Worlds, was littered with unique collaborations across numerous genres with a multitude of international singer/songwriters and indie projects backing up the young gun. Its impact on the genre is inarguable, with Porter going on to play his coveted Worlds Live Sets for years to come. Hundreds of producers across genre lines have cited Worlds as their favorite body of work within the EDM space.
With the world’s attention in the palm of his hands, Porter essentially vanished: his NERO “The Thrill” remix and 2016 mega-collab “Shelter” with Madeon were the only marks on his resume post-debut album.
Six years since the release of Worlds, Porter Robinson has finally emerged from his hibernation with the release of “Get Your Wish.” In a dizzying whirlwind of self-criticism, revelation, and catharsis, the latest track likely resonates even greater in Porter’s own mind than the audience that clamored for his music all these years. Accompanied by a stunning visual effort, Porter has yet again knocked it clean out of the park.
The synth-pop influences on the surprise single are undeniably on display as the colorful instrumental flits and floats through its entirety with a downtempo-but-motivated beat that enjoys its stay rather than rushing towards the end. Nothing is perhaps as powerful as the mousy vocals – the distorted pitch of Porter’s own voice representative of the fear and expectations of the name he created for himself echoed in lines such as “so tell me how it felt when you walked on water / did you get your wish?”
No message could encapsulate the power of the self-reflection on display than the words of Porter himself:
Lost in the tumultuous emotionality of the track is the ever-important announcement of his forthcoming sophomore project, Nurture. Little is known at this point, but, needless to say, we are excited to hear what is on the docket for album number two. Porter simply stated that Nurture was ‘coming soon’.
Let us know what you think of “Get Your Wish” in the comments! We hope you like it as much as we did.
