Maryland based gNat provides a tasty treat for the ears with his newest work “Infancy,” released through Sweet Sounds Collective. This talent producer has graced a wide range of genres, and this newest track leans into the more melodic and glitchy vibes. He has had quite a few releases this year, including a bubbly tune titled “Deep Belly” with The Gradient Perspective Records. In February of this year, he had the opportunity to share a stage with Josh Teed and Ott. in addition to playing many other shows across the east coast.
This newest track showcases his pristine sound design and attention to detail, as he crafts a work that is both beautiful and meaningful. He gives us exclusive insight into the creation process:
Generally when speaking about my own songs, I like to preface it with the idea that I want my music to be left to an abstract understanding. I hope that people can interpret the song however it fits into their own personal life, and possibly allow it to be a vessel in their own personal journey.
For me, this song does mean a lot though. I think this one is cinematic and tells a bit of an intentional story. The first section is actually kinda revision/sampling of an ambient song that I wrote last year called “Playing in the Sandbox” (currently unreleased). THAT song is just about the memories I have of being a child playing with my two brothers out in our backyard. I think its overall theme is about the sense of wonder and imagination that a child inherently holds in their innocence. I think it’s important for me to try and touch back into those childish roots.
The second section samples a four-note piano/guitar but from a short animation called “The Life of Death” by Marsha Onderstijn & composed by Ramon de Wilde. This video really touched me, I highly recommend you watch it. The overall message I received from it is best said by one of the comments left under the video: “The moral is: we should not fear our death. We should live with it. When the time comes we should meet it with understanding.” Birth is just the first step of death.
This version is called “Infancy,” because it encapsulates that same feeling into a more embryonic state in my opinion. I also wrote this version of the song after a positive revelation that, despite the struggles I’m facing in my career, as well as my musical endeavors, that I’m just within infancy stages of all these pursuits, and there’s a long future awaiting for me with both. -gNat
Deeply resonating piano chords from the aforementioned sample begin this work, as listeners are gently guided along this sonic journey. It has an air of calamity and peacefulness, embodying the childlike sense of wonder that gNat characterizes. As the song glides along, it resonates with a Tipper-esque effervescent quality, weaving in a plethora of stylistic influences into a work of art. Listeners are transported to a dreamlike state, with echos of hip hop stylings peppered throughout. A little past the halfway mark the track drops down into a minor key, twisting the dream into an eerier vibe. The resolve then washes over as the familiar piano melody from the beginning rings out once more.
This track was an auditory anomaly from front to back, and we cannot wait to hear what else this maestro cooks up next. Let us know your thoughts in the comments and on socials on the new gNat track!
