Heard It Here First

New Orleans-born Dream Pusha is again back with another colossal release on Wormhole Music, this time with his downtempo EP, Beauty Through Distortion. Dream Pusha has an innate ability to create angelic soundscapes that enchant listeners with baroque composition, and this new EP is no different.

I fell in love with Dream Pusha’s style four years ago when I first heard his collab with Mersiv, “Inferno.” Mersiv and Dream Pusha’s styles became so fantastically interwoven, comingling Mersiv’s heavy rumbling bass and Dream Pusha’s ornate tempos. Since then, Dream Pusha has had the incredible opportunity to open for Mersiv at his NYE show in 2022 at the legendary Terminal West. On top of a list of exemplary festival performances like Infrasound and Global Dance Fest, he has an impressive list of music on Mersiv’s MorFlo Records, Wormhole Music and tons of fire self-released tracks.

Beauty Through Distortion begins with “Breath Work.” This effervescent work gives off a sensation of floating or transcending as the notes ebb and flow through your speakers. As the pace increases, I feel reminiscent of my first Tipper show, with the eccentric fluctuation of synths, notes, and bass as my brain tries desperately to make sense of what I’m hearing. 

Following “Breath Work” is the serene opus “New Canvas.” I love the way this song flows so naturally. It has Charlesthefirst vibes all over it, with an almost Jade Cicada flair. The first two minutes are wonderfully captivating and elegant, and the last minute dives into this psychedelic supernatural setting. 

“Draped Out” brings Beauty Through Distortion to a smooth conclusion with its use of glorious kicks and snares, giving a live band feel to it. You can’t help but close your eyes and nod your head up and down to the beat; it’s infectious. This one is equally calm, cool, and collected, but paired with a filthy, grimy beat. Dream Pusha’s New Orleans roots really shine through in this, as if it is an homage to where much of his musical inspiration draws from.
