Colorado-based Motifv is a beatsmith unlike any other, blending elements of funk, indie, hip-hop, and bass to paint sonic narratives unlike any other. Where The Sun Sets is the first of two EPs from Motifv thematically revolving around the upcoming eclipse. Philos Records makes for the perfect home for these records, as label boss Daily Bread also uses the moon as a common theme within his music.
Motfiv’s lunar journey begins with “On My Way” with a melancholy yet hopeful feel. A lone horn plays in the intro, giving way to a slow, methodical beat utilizing classic synth stabs and soft textures. “Elephants In The Park” is a funky hip-hop number with an iconic vocal sample. The track’s soft bass meshes perfectly with the wails of the horns.
“Faces” leans heavier on its bassline, backed by nostalgic samples and chopped-up soulful vocals. “Higher” is a hypnotizing arrangement, using a haunting, slowed-down child’s encantation as its lead vocal. The EP’s eponymous final track is a slow, mellow track employing traditional keys and a litany of soulful vocals. It’s a hopeful end to the EP, evoking the feeling of a profound rebirth.
Motifv is coming off a much-hyped headlining show in Denver and was announced as an opener for the legendary STS9 at Red Rocks on July 20th. The follow-up EP to Where The Sun Sets is titled Behind The Moon and drops later this month on March 22nd. We will certainly be listening to these during the eclipse and all summer long.
