In an explorative combined effort outside of their comfort zones, Canadian artist So Sus teams up with Sadrn and five-time collaborator Hex Cougar for a hyperpop-influenced trap tune titled, “Tried It All”. This track fuses elements of future bass, wave, and hyperpop into an out-of-the-box arrangement that strays away from all three of the producers’ sonic familiarity. In a dream team fashion, they each bring their individual production prowess to the table for “Tried It All”, carefully combining Sadrn’s vocals, So Sus’s glitchy melodies, and Hex Cougar’s gritty static synths into a fluid yet heartfelt melodic banger.
“Tried It All” is the epitome of embracing the unexpected while yielding a message of relinquishment. This vulnerable anthem also serves as the first single off of Hex Cougar label’s Alter/Ego III compilation project. In the past, these three artists have skewed towards melodic dubstep, hybrid trap, or future bass, making them no strangers to esteemed labels like Monstercat, Deadbeats, MorFlo, Subsidia, Bassrush, and Sable Valley. The overarching hyperpop influence ingrained in “Tried It All” makes it an undoubtable standout collaboration within each of the contributing artists’ discographies.
“Tried It All” opens with Sadrn’s angsty filtered vocals laying the melodic groundwork for his collaborators to build upon, as he proclaims, “tried it all to make you stay; everything I could and you walked away”. Through an ensemble of oscillating synth-play, trap-infused drums, and reverberated vocal effects, So Sus and Hex Cougar add their fuel into the fire. The trio up the ante and accelerate the tempo of the arrangement to fashion a hyperpop heater that materializes as a true merger of future bass fury and “sadboi” grunge.
