Chozen is prepping for his upcoming show on 7/17 at Larimer Lounge in Denver, to celebrate his debut EP, Grounded By The Bass, set to drop on Liquid Stranger’s Wakaan label two days earlier. It’s crystal clear Chozen has a huge future ahead, so learn more about him below with our exclusive Q & A and listen to his HIHF guest mix below! HIHF: When did you fall in love with electronic music? When did you first know you wanted to start creating it?
My high school graduation gift was a ticket to Bonnaroo! I had been to electronic shows before, but this is where I truly fell in love with this style of music. I bought a DJ controller the day I got home and never looked back.
HIHF: How did you connect with Liquid Stranger’s Wakaan label?
Releasing on WAKAAN has always been a massive dream of mine! I remember going to some Liquid Stranger shows in my early years of getting into dubstep and just really enjoying the experimental element of his sound design. The first mixtape I ever released under CHOZEN was actually called “WAKAAN Duh,” and was essentially made up of songs from the label. Putting out music with them has been written on my goal board for years, but honestly, I’ve just been doing everything in my power to get my project and music to a point where it felt like it was ready!
HIHF: How does it feel to have your first official EP released on arguably the most major imprint for experimental bass music?
I can’t even put it into words. I don’t make music for validation, but to have years of hard work pay off in this way makes all of the sleepless nights, juggling multiple jobs, and other sacrifices worth it. I’m really humbled to have my first EP drop on such a recognized label and it feels like I’ve finally found my home.
HIHF: What do you want fans to know about your Grounded By The Bass EP?
Grounded By The Bass is an expression of myself. I spent the last seven years working in finance — suit and tie to the office every day, so there was a lot of duality between the professional side of me and the side of me that loves bass music. I think the dance music community is so special because it brings people together who might not necessarily interact otherwise.
Music allows people the freedom to put any preconceived notions aside and just be themselves and connect. And when life inevitably gets crazy, music is the thing that grounds us. It brings us back to what’s important, fostering connection and community. If you pay attention to the lyrics of GBTB, Def3 did an incredible job of relaying the story that I was trying to tell through the song.
HIHF: What can fans expect from the EP release party at Larimer Lounge?
A night of energy! I always try to bring a lot of energy to my sets and we have some special things in store for this show. The support for the night is insanely talented as well, shoutout to AEYE, Mind Splitter, and COSTA! I’ll be hosting Bass Bingo leading up to the event and have some friends playing that too. I really just want to create an environment for people to be together and have a good time, that’s what it’s all about to me.
HIHF: Who are some electronic music inspirations for you and this project in particular?
Liquid Stranger is definitely one of my biggest inspirations, but that’s a given, I don’t think there’s a world where experimental bass music would be as popular of a genre as it is now without him. Zeds Dead is another huge inspiration to me though! I make a lot of different genres and I’m not sure if anyone has a more diverse catalog than them, especially during their live sets.
HIHF: What about inspirations from outside the electronic music space? Or outside the music space in general?
Outside of music? My family. I’m extremely fortunate to be close with my family, they were the ones who instilled in me that hard work always prevails and encouraged me to pursue music!
HIHF: Who is on your Mount Rushmore of electronic music producers? You CAN’T pick Liquid Stranger!
Criminal! Other than him, I’d have to say Zeds Dead, Excision, CloZee, and LSDREAM. I think each of them have built a legacy, whether it be events, festivals, or labels that are staples in the community. The way they support new artists in the scene is something I hope to be able to do one day, too.
HIHF: What can fans expect from Chozen for the rest of 2025 going into 2026?
To start, a LOT of new music! I have some new songs I’m super excited about, as well as a few collaborations that I think are going to make some noise. We have a GBTB merch capsule on the way, some new shows to share soon, and a handful of other announcements that I can’t talk about quite yet. Grounded By The Bass is just the start of it all!
