Sonya Broner aka Level Up has just dropped her debut EP Scared of the Dark!
The EP is highly anticipated after releasing single “Bedtime Stories” through GRVDNCR earlier this year, and the dubstep label has once again handled the release masterfully.
Aptly named for her consistent inclusion of spritely, twinkling synths, Level Up’s music belongs in the most nightmarish Legend of Zelda dungeon imaginable. Her approach to dubstep is unique yet accessible – bright sounds blending neatly with explosive peaks and villainous sound bites.
Citing influences from artists Rusko, Skream, and Caspa, the rookie producer has already graced stages such as Lost Lands, Electric Forest, and High Caliber as well as toured nationally with riddim heavyweights Subtronics, He$H, and Bommer.
The three track EP makes for a well-timed fright as summer dims to a close: “Scared of the Dark,” “Closet Crawlers,” and “Glass Mask” elicit varying levels of mystery and spookiness, but they are unanimous in their hard-hitting bass and gritty drops.
Discussing the new release, Level Up says, “I’ve always had a deep appreciation for female super villains and admired their balance between power, fear and beauty. I wanted my EP to represent those same qualities and created these tracks with that in mind. Since I’ve had more time at home, I’ve been watching a ton of movies and found the perfect opportunity to bring “Scared Of The Dark” to life. I had a lot of fun playing around with writing eerie intros followed by super heavy drops and having the chance to bring my inspiration to life through my music.”
Level Up’s first EP is relentless, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for future releases from this thrilling new artist! What are your thoughts on Scared of the Dark? Let us know below in the comments!
