Father Figure is a rising talent to watch that you need on your radar. Their latest track, “Bad Juju,” is captivating crowds with its infectious energy while building momentum for their anticipated album, Duality, coming in December.

The self-proclaimed “Sub-Driven Jamtronic Electro Hip-Hop” duo is powered by the creative minds of Matt Weishaupt (Matty Dubz) and Matt McLaren, who joined in 2022. Father Figure fuses Golden Era hip-hop beats with vibrant electronic layers and jam-scene improvisation, creating high-energy sets that feel both nostalgic and fresh.

Seamlessly shifting across old-school hip-hop, downtempo, bass, rock, and atmospheric electronica, the pair has carved out a unique signature style across originals, remixes, and flips. In addition, they bring a refreshing, innovative take to many quintessential classics while forging their own path forward.

Hudson Valley-grown and Albany-based, Father Figure has performed on festival stages like NY Harvest Fest, Camp Bisco, Big Dub, Dreamscape, Fire Lights, Karnival of the Arts, Outside Lands, and more. Father Figure has also performed alongside HIHF favorites like Pretty Lights, CloZee, Manic Focus, Maddy O’Neal, Of The Trees, SoDown, Tripp St., and many others through shared shows and support slots.

Father Figure’s new banger, “Bad Juju,” masterfully samples N.E.R.D.‘s 2001 banger “Rockstar,” weaving chopped vocal samples with their signature electro-jam improvisation. Furthermore, the track also ingeniously incorporates an iconic sample from Queen’s own legendary 1970s anthem, “We Will Rock You,” resulting in a dynamic fusion that feels both timeless and cutting-edge.

Here’s what Father Figure had to say about“Bad Juju”:

“Bad Juju” is gritty yet triumphant. It’s the sound of the angry conversation you never got to have with the person pulling the strings, delivered while walking tall despite the plight. At 85 BPM, it pairs heavy low-end weight with the Golden Era hip-hop swagger that defines our sound.” – Father Figure

This funk-fueled act seems like they are here to stay and we are amped for their new full-length project. Here’s a sneak peek at what Father Figure had to say about their upcoming album Duality:

“Our most personal work to date, this album explores holding opposing states at once: endings and beginnings, grief and gratitude and not letting those feelings cancel each other out. Sitting with the contradictions. “Bad Juju” is the last look before the full record lands.” – Father Figure
