Minnesota has blessed us with a new single titled “Beacon” and we’re so here for it. It’s been just under a year since we’ve seen him drop music, with his latest release “Into The Void” gracing our ears in March 2022. He’s dished out a few mixes in the interim with his “Bicycle Day Mix Vol. 5” and “chill tf out vol. 9” dropping on SoundCloud last year, but we’re very glad he’s bringing us a fresh original track to kick off 2023.
While “Beacon” starts off with glitched-out percussion and some mellow keys, Minnesota quickly brings the energy. A spacious wub and a speaker-thrashing saw bass play back and forth over chunky drums, while ear candy abounds to fill out the mix. Then he just starts flipping in and out of a reggae style seamlessly. Call and response between stylistic “flavors” in a track is both creative and difficult to execute. But he really nailed it here.
The sound design stays unified throughout the track, but, the feel of the percussion, introduced syncopated chords, and reggae fills create a unique section that comes and goes as the song progresses. It’s absolutely amazing to see Minnesota’s musicality and versatility shine through a track like this.
We’re thrilled to see Minnesota release a single as powerful as “Beacon” and can’t wait to see what else he’s got in store for us. If you want to catch the legend live, make sure to check out his events calendar. He’s got a show in San Francisco on March 24 and another in Kansas City, MO with Zeke Beats on April 1st. He’s also performing at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater in support of Peekaboo, alongside Rusko, NotLö, and MPort, on April 26th.
