dêtre is a name that should be on every bass music fan’s radar. His new EP, “Subsurface,” on Wubaholics, is a powerful display of low-end bass synthesis and groove. It’s a significant step up for the Michigan-based producer and only makes fans more excited for what’s to come in the future.

The EP’s opening track, “You Know I,” begins with a haunting melody and a slow-paced trap beat. A deep, distorted bassline blends with the melody before taking over, enveloping the track. The bassline uses cohesive one-shot stabs and FX, giving the mix loads of room to breathe and effectively using negative space.

The same can be said for “140 Kids,” another example of excellent low-end mixing. The track’s name has a great story as well. dêtre posted a teaser of the clip poking fun at deep dubstep fans captioned ‘140 kids.’ The track finally being released makes the joke come full circle. dêtre employs wicked distorted bass and infectious percussion for this dancefloor weapon.

“Whind” picks up where “140 Kids” left off. This song uses deep, distorted bass leads to paint a sinister soundscape. An ominous whistling sound persists as the bass dances around the beat. The two tracks’ noted cohesion excites me for dêtre’s future works.

dêtre is a local favorite in Detroit and around Michigan. He recently played a show with CLB and Om Unit thrown in the warehouse he owns, after throwing his own headlining show at the warehouse last year. He plays direct support for longtime friend G-REX on May 12th in Kalamazoo. Then, he’ll grace the stage at Tangent Gallery on May 20th, setting the vibe for Slang Dogs and Buku
