As we all know, music comes in all shapes and sizes. One of my personal favorites, and in my opinion, one of the most underrated in the electronic scene, is downtempo / ambient bass music. Portland-based producer, Buhlü, continuously proves to be a driving force in the downtempo domain. His latest releases, “Self-Destruct” and “just4u” traverse the realms of sensational organic music featuring field recordings he’s amassed throughout his global travels over the past decade.
A founding member of Beverage Collective, Daniel Gaster AKA Buhlü, has contributed to the West Coast music community since 2017, sharing his project with countless venues and performing annually at Stilldream Festival, as well as a collective sunrise set at Burning Man last year. After taking a seven-year hiatus from releasing music, he has since pushed two self-released EPs and numerous singles with Destinuna and Objective Collective.
“Self-Destruct” and “just4u” are just a taste of what’s to come from this talented artist. Serving as a prelude to his upcoming album, these two tracks are a profound exemplification of his imagination and ingeniousness. “Self-Destruct” immediately draws you in, alluring you with cascading notes that ebb and flow, dancing harmoniously with the surrounding pulsation. “just4u” dreams up a tranquil utopia between the percussion and heavenly basses married with serene rains he captured while lying on a hammock on a beach in Japan during a monsoon. You can’t help but close your eyes and feel your mind elevate into nirvana.
I admire Buhlü’s discernible elegance and inventiveness and can not wait to hear what he’s cooking up for his upcoming full-length album and EPs set to drop this year.
