Flume is a name in electronic music that hardly needs any introduction – though doing diligence would point one in the direction of three international releases receiving widespread acclaim.
Since his debut in 2012, the Australian producer/DJ has netted numerous ARIA Awards and a Grammy to boot with chart-topping singles and his universally celebrated sophomore album Skin.
Perhaps more perpendicular than parallels in terms of careers, songwriter/producer Toro y Moi has made a career in synthesizing genres.
Drawing from eclectic ideals of ’80s R&B, dream pop, prog, and ambient electronic music, the self-identified hobbyist effectively established an entire genre – chillwave – by pure experimental circumstance.
The supposed pioneers of two impressively characterized music genres, with Flume similarly credited with the emergence of future bass, have brought unprecedented work ethics to the music industry with consistent open-mindedness.
With Flume’s collaborative history engulfing an array of indie/alternative artists including Little Dragon and Beck – and stated influences from others such as Bon Iver and Toro y Moi, himself – it seemed as if an intersection between these two was inevitable.
Conceived from this collaboration is the intoxicating single “The Difference” released through Flume’s own Future Classic record label. Betraying the anticipated ambiance perhaps expected of such a pairing is a fervently energetic track with dazzling, spacey synths and a plaintively anthemic vocal performance. These elements feel subliminally suspended above a drum ‘n’ bass-inspired shuffle beat that is more closely akin to Toro y Moi’s abstract house project Les Sins.
The single is punctuated by a simple but enticingly psychedelic music video and an exciting announcement of the three-day event Flume and Friends 2020 at Red Rocks Amphitheater. Fans of the electronic powerhouse will be delighted with each night focusing on each of his three full length projects – Flume, Skin, and the Hi This is Flume mixtape – plus guest appearances from Mura Masa, Clams Casino, Cashmere Cat, and tons of Flume collaborators!
The 2020 takeover takes place on June 8th – 10th; “The Difference” will surely still be in our ears and on our minds in the meantime. Let us know what you think of the latest release in the comments!
