Heard It Here First

Experimental bass sorceress VEIL makes her highly anticipated return to the Wakaan label with her newest project “NETHERWORLDS.” The sinister four-track EP shows VEIL’s refined sound design as she launches listeners deep into the unknown. VEIL’s previous Wakaan release “IXXI” was a monstrous EP that showcased her eerie production style. It is with no surprise that “NETHERWORLDS” follows with more unearthly bangers.

Along with her popular Wakaan discography, VEIL has released music on Clozee‘s Odyzey Music and her own directed label Street Ritual. Her back-to-back sets with NotLö have become a recent festival favorite as the two thrive off each other on stage in the bass-heavy performances and rocked dozens of festival stages together over the past few years.

Fans of the cutting-edge bass queen might have caught one of her thrilling sets earlier this year at festivals such as Okeechobee, Sonic Bloom, and Shambhala, or as support during Wakaan legend and label head Liquid Stranger‘s ‘B A L A N C E’ tour. Next up, VEIL will be rattling speakers at WAKAAN Music Festival, Infrasound Equinox, and Light’s All Night to end 2022. You can also catch her on select dates supporting Level Up on her headlining ‘Spellbound’ tour this fall.

The opening track “Warning” gives listeners a taste of what tortured dimension VEIL is bringing us to. It starts off with distant whispering noises that sound like a band of disturbing creatures trying to communicate with us. A robotic vocal sample echoes “warning,” before building into a drop with heavily distorted basslines and a pounding beat. The whispers continue throughout giving this tune an ominous feeling from beginning to end.

Next is “Bad Habits,” featuring bars from syrenn. This banger combines VEIL’s production prowess with syrenn’s champion flow creating an explosive anthem. Check out the music video for “Bad Habits” directed by visual artist 5/9 and premiered by Bassrush below.

Building up the intensity comes “FUTURE NULL,” the third track on the EP. This one picks up the tempo a bit while still tapping the maleficent sounds which VEIL has made her staple. A drum and bass stomper with warped bass blasting over and over make this one an absolute gem. It makes us feel as if there is a sense of urgency within this distant world that VEIL has trapped her listeners in.

Last on the EP is “None Of This Is Real,” a collaboration with HerShe, arguably the heaviest on the project.  This track delivers growling bass, throbbing percussion, and spine-tingling vocal samples. “NETHERWORLDS” leaves us questioning what dark realms exist and where VEIL will take us next.
