Sleepy Tom is a name that you know. You are probably familiar with his collaboration with Diplo from 2015 called “Be Right There“. After a couple of years off, he is back in 2022 with a new album on the way and a slew of singles to precede it. His latest, the title track of the album, “This Thing Called Life“, is a disco-house bop that is sure to have dancefloors grooving through these next few months.

When talking about his inspiration for the project, Sleepy Tom said the following:

“With ‘This Thing Called Life’, I wanted to make a collection of songs that were going to lift me out of my funk. I was looking for music that could satisfy my club cravings, while also leaving room for melody––disco! Working with Parker allowed me to maintain a larger scope without losing perspective in the minutiae of producing a song. I sincerely hope that this EP captures the essence of our present life––putting one foot in front of the other, managing the ups and downs, and finding the joy in what you do.”

Now, let’s unpack the track itself. “This Thing Called Life” feels like a classic disco tune from the late 70s with a modern twist and delivers perfectly on the intended vibe.

In classic disco style, the track features a four-on-the-floor beat layered with bouncy synths. To round out the full sonic landscape, Sleepy Tom features vocals from another era with lyrics to match. The listener can’t help but take the advice of the singer and fully let the music take them in. With every element hitting its spot perfectly, this song is a bonafide earworm that gets better with each additional listen.

The full album is set to release later this year via MNRK Records. Listeners can expect more of this type of bouncy, disco-house tunes and to tide you over there are three singles out so far that have been collected in playlist format on Spotify & Soundcloud.
