Heard It Here First

Two of Brooklyn’s finest producers, Dice Man and Mikayli, have released their two-track EP Waiting For You. While our reader’s might know the artists’ work, they may not know that the two are also good friends. This shines through in the seamless sound of this collaboration which serves up a healthy dose of both upbeat and reflective moods with effortless style.

The title track from Dice Man & Mikayli’s EP begins with a catchy synth melody along with delicate arpeggios and ambiances that fill the space. A tasteful vocal hook sings the “Waiting For You” line, while light drums establish DnB rhythms. It all falls away into the chorus. A perfect call and response in the bassline, snappy drums, and masterful use of effects and vocals combine into this insanely catchy DnB section.

Dice Man and Mikayli switch up the vibe in the interlude, with more melancholy and reflective melodies and arrangement. A picked guitar, new vocal cuts, and flavorful use of effects all work together here. The second chorus features new (sometimes whispered) vocals, which sound to me like they were performed by Dice Man. It has a halftime drum pattern and thick chunky basses that cut out to bring back the vocals and guitar. Toward the end, the intro synth returns, lending a cyclical nature to the track.

“With The Best” is equally evocative, and brings Dice Man and Mikayli’s EP to a perfect resolution. Another beautiful intro features atmospheric effects and vocal-sounding synth melodies over a beautiful two-chord progression. Whispered vocals lend an organic flavor, and the build is immaculate. The chorus features a halftime rhythm, enormous basses that sit perfectly in the mix, and a catchy arrangement that switches up halfway through. A brief interlude provides a chance to catch our breath. Then, a more ambient play on the chorus hits, right in the feels. The outro is SO good. If you’ve never been blessed with a Dice Man poetry set (shoutout to our Yonderville family) then this section is a little taste. If you have, then you know exactly what I mean.

The new EP from Dice Man and Mikayli is exactly what I was hoping for. The variety of flavors across two spectacular tracks is executed perfectly.
