It’s finally here, one of the most anticipated collaborations of the year has arrived, Rezz and Subtronics’ sinister yet danceable track “Puzzle Box” is out now via Deadbeats. The two superstars have risen rapidly through the ranks of bass music, with Rezz releasing her first independent project, Beyond the Senses in 2019. She has since received the JUNO award for electronic album of the year in 2020, earned praise from the likes of Billboard and AlternativePress, and sold out some of the largest venues in the world while receiving millions of streams.
Subtronics has taken the scene by storm, releasing his debut album Fractals this year to overwhelming acclaim from fans and fellow artists. The cyclops army leader has also launched a record label, Cyclops Recordings, in December of 2020 and is now on a massive 50+ show national tour featuring some of the nation’s largest and best venues. The collaboration of these two titans has brought us the dark but funky dance music tune “Puzzle Box”, an incredible fusion of both artist’s highly distinctive sounds.
The track begins with a piano melody reminiscent of a thriller movie, layered in is maniacal, echoing laughter and a series of effects that build anticipation in a hair-raising manner. Slowly the bassline cuts in, fading in from the background just before the climax begins. The peak brings us a gorgeous, bouncy bassline, with Subtronics’ trademark sound design clear and loud in the wonky, crushing bass hits. Simultaneously, the melody and pacing invoke the sound that made Rezz an international sensation, giving us something resembling a bass house tune but with the signature production of the two artists flawlessly melded together. A break brings the levels back down before a vocal sample initiates the second drop, which rattles the bones with juicy bass.
Bringing together the funky, wobbly sound of Subtronics with the ominous but intoxicating energy of Rezz, “Puzzle Box” is a grade-A dance music heater sure to receive a great deal of playtime at festivals all over the world this year.
