When it comes to emotional drum and bass music, UK duo Koven is one of the world’s premier talents. Producer Matt Rowat and frontwoman Katie Boyle make for one of the best duos in bass music. Their brand of theatrical drum and bass is unlike any other. Their newest single, “Take It Away,” out now via Monstercat, utilizes a dazzling array of strings and powerful vocals.
Koven is set for a massive summer with stops at Tomorrowland, Rampage Open Air, and Liquicity in the Netherlands. “Take It Away” is the lead single from the duo’s upcoming EP, returning to Monstercat where Matt and Katie released their album Butterfly Effect back in 2020.
“Take It Away” begins subtly as Katie’s angelic vocals fill the soundscape. Beautiful, cinematic strings recorded by the esteemed Parallax Orchestra enter the mix and combine magnificently with the vocal track. The vocals then rise to a climax as a flurry of hi-hats up the pace. A subliminal yet powerful bassline pulses through the mix, giving this emotional ballad incredible energy. Koven walks the line between theatrical melodies and vigorous dancefloor energy expertly.
“I’m so excited for this to be our first single back after not releasing anything since last year,” Katie said about the release. “I think it’s something quite different for us but really special. It’s such a pretty track. It’s heartbreaking but also hopeful. I hope people connect with it the way we have.”
