Chris Teel, better known by his alias Common Creation, has been on a tear. With releases on Liquid Stranger‘s SSKWAN downtempo label to kick off 2023, his most recent work, “Sunset Seance,” is his second EP on WAKAAN this year alone. Known for his fusion of experimental bass and funk, Common Creation is a musician’s musician. He has developed a sound that’s unique, boundary-pushing, and timeless. Let’s dive into this “Sunset Seance.”

To kick things off we have “Sun Seeker.” Glitched-out effects and melodic elements lead into a funky drum beat that teases us right until the chorus. Swung percussion, euphoric atmospheres, vocal chops, and synth elements create a collage of colorful beauty. But then he hits us with the wubs and the energy is simply breathtaking. It’s a tapestry woven of sounds that are immaculately crafted and intricately arranged. The last third of the tune gives us a chance to catch our breath, and we’re played out by an ambient guitar.

Next we have “Sleepless Nights.” This opens as smooth jam, with synth bells and a ton of flavor. An effected vocal sample carries us into the pre-chorus. This tune makes me feel like I’m cruising down Sunset Boulevard in the year 3000. The chorus smacks just right. Vocal cuts, fat basses, melodic bits, and atmospheric elements abound. This EP just sounds… expensive. In the best way. Everything is so detailed and crisp, while also showcasing Common Creation’s top-notch arrangement skills. The second chorus has some of my favorite wubs all year. Insane work.

“Swamp Zombie” starts off with some cut up synths, effected percussion, and an incredible vibe. A bass melody brings the energy into the chorus, which is just insanely thick. Distorted basses, funky drums, and a ton of soul pervade this tune. It has a flavor of classic GRiZ, but with a signature, modern twist. The second chorus strips things back and gets REAL neuro on us. Common Creation’s sound design and pallet are one of a kind.

“Bizarro Bayou” closes out the EP. Tinkling synth effects, a swung bass, and a fat drum fill lead us into what might be my favorite moment of the EP. Huge, in-your-face drums set the groove for a sub-heavy chorus that has incredible synths dancing overtop. This is a relentless beat, and I can’t wait to hear it live. The second chorus might hit even harder, with a driving beat and bassline that just doesn’t quit. The arrangement intricacy combined with musicality and insane production define Common Creation’s project, and this track is a shining example of that triple threat.

“Sunset Seance” might just be my favorite work from Common Creation yet. And that’s saying something. I look forward to seeing him at more WAKAAN events now that he is part of Optimystic Endeavors, which manages a huge number of WAKAAN-affiliated artists such as Sully, Luzcid, Ravenscoon, Liquid Stranger, and many more. I know for sure that he’s playing on October 27th at Mission Ballroom, so don’t miss your chance to catch his live set. It’ll be one to remember.
