Two of the hottest figures in bass music, Tape B and Effin, have once again demonstrated their boundless creativity with the release of ‘Ups and Downs.’ Tape B, a mainstay in the experimental bass realm, has garnered a dedicated following and the attention of renowned EDM stars such as Subtronics, Wooli, and Ganja White Night. Effin, a visionary in his own right, has broken free from typical bass music conventions, intertwining heavy, distorted wubs with rich melodic leads to create a unique auditory experience. Together, this duo is pushing creative boundaries and inspiring a new wave of appreciation for bass music, producing tracks that feel both nostalgically familiar and groundbreakingly new.

Tape B has firmly secured his place among the upper echelons in bass music. The young artist has cultivated an eclectic fanbase that includes both long-time dubstep enthusiasts and the new generation of ravers. With fiery releases like his celebrated “Car Tunes” mixtapes and the recent hit EP “Distortion Theory,” it’s clear that Tape B is a standout figure in the genre, and he is only getting bigger and bigger. His commitment to showcasing his love for old-school hip-hop and his passion for innovative sound design make his music feel like a time machine. The thumping throwback rap samples and captivating bass drops bridge the gap between the era of cassettes and modern electronic music. With a stacked summer tour ahead, Tape B is poised to continue his reign as the prince of bass music.

Effin has became one to watch over the years by merging creative sampling, advanced production techniques, and retro-inspired elements to create a sound that resonates as both contemporary and classic. After relocating to Nashville, Effin has tapped into the city’s dynamic culture, incorporating its creative vibe into his music while expanding the limits of contemporary bass music. Recognized for his talent in combining nostalgic appeal with innovative sound design, Effin is forging an original route in the electronic music scene and his dedication to representing his own musical roots is what makes him a true creative powerhouse.

The journey of ‘Ups and Downs’ begins with a slow and sparse introduction, layering a buzzing synth, laid-back snare, and entrancing vocal samples. As the drums intensify and rise into the drop, we are ushered into a realm of sonic enchantment. The first drop is a testament to Effin’s exceptional talent, seamlessly blending disjointed rhythms and old-school instrumentals with fresh dubstep grooves. The saxophone and piano melodies soar above Tape B’s gut-wrenching bass, creating a unique harmony that is both captivating and intriguing. The second drop rises cinematically but breaks down light and loose. A head-knocking bass line supports celestial echoes of strings and brass, leaving the listener in a deep vintage daze.

Here’s what Effin had to say about the new release alongside Tape B:

“Tape B and I have been sending each other ideas for over a year, and it wasn’t until this one that everything clicked. We put this song together in less than a week and it’s a perfect mesh of both of our styles – and you will definitely hear that. We both love how it turned out, enjoy!”

The two acts will both be performing at Bonnaroo and Shambhala 2025. They’ll also be performing together for Tape B’s tour in the St. Pete/Tampa area at Jannus Live as well as the iconic east-coast destination the Brooklyn Mirage, in NYC.
