What do you get when you combine spooky atmospheres and massive bass sounds for a perfect fit for your Halloween party? Bass music mainstay Notixx‘s new LP HypNotixx ticks all the boxes; a multigenre haunted journey with crisp sound design that’s right at home on Ganja White Night‘s SubCarbon label.

Hailing from Buffalo, Notixx made a name for himself with his signature sound design, combining huge, wonky bass stabs, sustains, and basslines with trappy song structures appealing to a wide range of bass music fans. This is seen in the various events and artists Notixx has played with, including Lost Lands and Wakaan Music Festival.

Notixx’s second LP begins with “Wrath,” a hybrid trap tune showcasing many of his signature sounds. “Engage” creates a mystifying atmosphere with a flute in the build-up before giving way to a classic Notixx bassline. “Starlight Transmission” opts for softer textures and a deeper, sustained bassline and is a great change of pace after the first two heavy tunes.

“Runaway (Part 1)” employs a melancholic lead and vocals before a laser-filled bassline. The track’s second drop features a lighter, more euphoric four-on-the-floor house beat. “Turning Back (Part 2)” utilizes haunting background sounds and a halftime beat, a marked shift in tone for the record. This song’s second drop includes a high-end melody similar to the flute heard in “Engage.”

“Chamber” brings back the hybrid trap song structure with a spectral bassline and a moody atmosphere. Notixx taps back into the halftime grooves on “Conflict” coupled with a sinister, confrontational vocal sample from the movie The Naked Ape. “Rewired” calls back to the flute sample from earlier in the album. “Step Up”  is the album’s triumphant finish, juxtaposing heavy bass with a light, melodic second drop to wrap up the record.

HypNotixx establishes itself as an essential record for fans of classic brostep and modern heavy dubstep. Notixx solidified himself as a mainstay on the SubCarbon label, honing in his signature sound with quality sonic storytelling and a good variety of genres and styles.
