New York-based Smokestax has been on a tear over the past year. Between his main project and side project Rsrch Chmcls, the ascending talent released numerous singles and a full-length LP in the last calendar year. These releases include releases on The Gradient Perspective and LoFreq among numerous self-releases. Smokestax’s music spans bass music subgenres including downtempo, halftime, neuro, and dubstep.

On top of that, he’s constantly posting videos of WIPs (works in progress) on his social media channels. His latest release “Old School” pulls influence from classic hip-hop production while employing wicked neuro sound design.

The track begins with a white noise riser and background FX. Then, a punchy halftime hip-hop beat and bass stabs take over the melody, giving the track incredible bounce and danceability. A low-end distorted bass fill punctuates the beginning of each measure. Smokestax’s sound design prowess shows through on this tune, as the bassline synth is incredibly clean and crisp.

Smokestax plans to take his tunes on the road this Spring, as he’s teased a run of shows that are soon to be announced. Be sure to look out for those announcements as you will not want to miss out on seeing this talented beatmaker in action and let us know what you think of “Old School” below in the comments!
