Denver-based Duffrey is one of the more well-polished artists making waves in the scene today. His style knows no limits, keeping listeners on their toes with releases that span across the full spectrum of possibilities. The king of shred can hit you with halftime, drum & bass, you name it; his production prowess is on another level. Today, Duffrey makes his debut on Liquid Stranger’sSSWKAN label with his five-track, downtempo Legend Of The Alley Cat EP.
Over the last year, Duffrey has made some amazing strides as an artist. 2022 saw the production wizard play some legendary shows, supporting artists like Jade Cicada in Atlanta, Mersiv at Mission Ballroom in Denver, Daily Bread at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue, Colorado, and many more. Duffrey is also a member of the always-entertaining trio, Ultrasloth (with kLL sMTH and bioLuMigen), which closed the year on an epic tour with Chris Karns and visuals from the legend, Glass Crane. On the festival circuit, whether it was a solo performance or with Ultrasloth, Duffrey played some memorable sets at events like Sound Haven, Submersion Festival, Sonic Bloom, and Solasta.
On the release front, we were blessed with a four-track, drum & bass EP Shred the Infinite as well as an additional DnB/halftime heater in “Flitz”, which was included on Street Ritual’sHORIZONS compilation. The Legend Of The Alley Cat EP is switching things up from his typical shred style, providing a unique blend of jazzy elements with downtempo beats. Duffrey recently gave fans of taste of what was to come during his two-night run at Meow Wolf in Denver. This also kicked off his Legend Of The Alley Cat Tour, which will be making several stops across the country this spring. Additionally, he will be supporting Daily Bread’s The Invisible Cinema Tour on a number of stops. Let us know if you’ll be seeing Duffrey live later this year!
Legend Of The Alley Cat begins with a welcoming, blissful track in “Divine Nonchalance”. Duffrey’s ethereal arrangement sets the tone for this EP, supported by beautiful arps that pan from side to side.
This seamlessly transitions into “Sideways Alleycat”, which provides listeners with dreamy atmospheres and deep bass lines. Moving on to the midway point in this EP, “Jazz Habits,” featuring pheel. and Ovoid, is the only collab featured on this project. This is straight out of a noir-style film, featuring engaging bass lines, heavier plucks and growls, and an addictive, head-nodding flow.
The EP closes with “Honeysuckling” and “Pipedream”, two upbeat tracks that give listeners hope and comfort as we continue this journey of growth in the midst of a chaotic world.
Here’s what Duffrey had to say about his new EP:
“Lately life feels more chaotic than ever. This EP is meant to be a moment of solace from that chaos. A break from the madness. Written with love from the deepest corners of my heart, Legend of the Alley Cat is a tale of hope and happiness in a disorganized world. Standing up to the dark with the light from within. Spreading that light to grow and to allow others to grow as well. This EP includes the third collaboration that Ovoid and I have written together and it’s the first one that will be released to the public, and it’s a pleasure to have worked with him and pheel. on Jazz Habits.”
We can’t wait to follow Duffrey’s journey this year and are looking forward to more spectacular releases. What did you think of the Legend Of The Alley Cat EP from Duffrey? Let us know in the comments or on our social media!
